Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

ELMO J. HURST, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Elmo J. Hurst has been an outstanding businessman and philanthropist in West Virginia and across the nation for over fifty years. After graduation from WVU in 1953 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mining Engineering and three years as Lieutenant (J. G.) in the United States Navy, he began work as an assistant Chief Engineer and assistant to the Vice President and General Manager of Winding Gulf Coals Inc. in West Virginia. He became Vice President and General Manager Of Lively Manufacturing and Equipment Company and J. O. Lively Construction Company. When these companies were sold to Elgin National Industries in 1969, he became President of both. In 1972 he became Executive Vice President and director of Elgin. He retired in 1988 as President of Elgin. Soon after, he purchased controlling interest in the Miller Bearing Company and Almega/Tru-Flex, Inc. and became Chairman and CEO of both companies. He also is Chairman and CEO and owns controlling interest of Mountain State Home Care, Inc. and AmeriCare Management Services, Inc. and serves on the Board of Directors of several engineering and financial and banking organizations.

The accomplishments of Hurst's professional activities are matched by his philanthropic efforts. He was instrumental in establishing the Beckley Area Foundation. He served as chair and member of the WVU Foundation Board of Directors for more than 20 years and has also served the University as a member of the College of Engineering Visiting Committee, the College of Minerals and Energy Resources Advisory Committee, Vice Chairman of "The Campaign" for WVU and as a member of the Executive Council of the Alumni Association.

The University has honored him by inducting him into The Order of Vandalia, Woodward Circle, The Irving Stewart Society, and selected him as WVU Mountaineer in 1980. The University also honored Elmo and his wife Betty by naming the atrium of the Minerals and Energy Resource Building in their honor.

He has generously donated his time and money in serving West Virginia in such organizations as the West Virginia Housing Authority Board, Governor Arch Moore's Advisory Council for Technical Services, the Beckley YMCA, and was instrumental in the foundation of the Women's Resource Center in Beckley. One measure of his important contributions to the Beckley community is the Spirit of Beckley Community Service Award he received in 1996.
